A History of Rosebank House

Rosebank House around 1895 Rosebank House around 1900

Rosebank House was built as a guest house in 1872. Janet McGregor, later to marry Duncan Macdonald, is mentioned in Land Registry records in connection with Rosebank as early as 1877. Duncan Macdonald, a joiner, was the proprietor of Rosebank in 1897. He built the nearby houses, Dochfour and Aldourie, now known as Mandalay. Duncan Macdonald remained at Rosebank House until 1936. After the death of his wife in the following year, the house passed to his daughter, Mary Isabella in 1937.

Duncan Macdonald, his wife Janet and daughter Mary Isabella are all buried in Balquhidder, a few yards from Rob Roy Macgregor.

Rosebank House was finally sold by the trustees of Janet Macdonald, with the consent of her daughter Mary Isabella, in December 1945, being acquired by Morag Cameron Maclachlan of Glasgow. In March 1947, the cottage now known as River View, situated on the far side of the passageway adjacent Rosebank House, was sold to David Burton Horsburgh of Edinburgh. Two months later in May, Rosebank House itself was sold to William Gilchrist Henderson and Agnes Thomson (nee Henderson). In July 1948, Agnes Thomson sold her half share to William Gilchrist Henderson. In March 1949, William Gilchrist Henderson sold the property to Robert Johnston Thomson, a bank accountant of Glasgow.

In 1970, Rosebank House was acquired by Alexander Young Clement and his wife, Elizabeth Wylie Stewart Clement. Ten years later in 1980, the property was bought by Thomas Kearney and his wife Anne Theresa Kearney of Stirling. In 1984, Rosebank House was acquired by John Frederick Campbell-Smith and Thirza Felicity Campbell-Smith of Doune. Next, in 1987, the property was purchased by Christopher John Belwood and his wife, Margaret Belwood together with Gerald Michael McWilliams. They owned Rosebank House for five years until 1992 when it was purchased by George Crawford Russell Hamilton and his wife Sheila Stewart Hamilton of Liverpool. Pete and Jill Moor acquired the property in 1997.

Mal Dingle acquired Rosebank House from Pete and Jill Moor in 2003.

The oldest section of the house, the front, comprising the dining room, kitchen, lounge, Rose and Mountain rooms, is of stone construction; the blue stone being cyanite, with the sandstone coins from Skye contrasting with gneiss and schist from Killin. We're indebted to a guest who happened to be a geology professor for this information!
The back of the house, comprising the Forest and Garden rooms was added in 1938.
