Rosebank House is well situated for a short break being located in the village of Strathyre on the eastern edge of the Trossachs in central Scotland. Strathyre makes a good base for walking. For more quotidian dining, there are three pubs in the village all within a few minutes walk. Additionally, Loch Lomond, Glencoe, Edinburgh and Glasgow are all within easy reach. To help you plan your short break we have put together a few ideas on days out to suit a range of interests.
Loch Lomond, Arrochar and Luss
Drive north to Crianlarich and round the scenic western shores of Loch Lomond. Enjoy lunch and views of the Cobbler's distinctive triple peak in the Village Inn in Arrochar and perhaps go on a scenic drive past Rest and Be Thankful to either Lochgoilhead or Dunoon.Return either by driving back the same way perhaps stopping for refreshment at the historic Drovers Inn or continue south perhaps visiting the award-winning Coach House Coffee Shop in Luss and taking some retail therapy at Loch Lomond Shores near Balloch before driving back via Drymen, Aberfoyle and Callander.
The Duke's Pass, The Trossachs and Loch Lomond
Drive south from Rosebank House and take the A821 (the Duke's Pass) from Kilmahog and enjoy superb views of the Trossachs and the hills to the north. In the summer, take the 7.5 miles-long Three Lochs Forest Drive which branches off to the east and winds round Loch Drunkie, Loch Reoidhte and Loch Venachar. Continue on to Aberfoyle and then take the B829 north-west past Loch Ard, Loch Chon, Loch Arklet and via Stronachlachar on to Inversnaid on the little-visited eastern shore of Loch Lomond. Perhaps take a stroll along the West Highland Way to Rob Roy's cave and the RSPB sanctuary.Fife Fishing Villages
Drive first to Falkland Palace and have a stroll round the gardens and the former royal palace. Then drive south-west to Elie and continue along the coastal road through the fishing villages of St Monans, Pittenweem, Anstruther and Crail before continuing on to St Andrews and driving back via the A91. Crail Pottery and Anstruther Fish Bar are well worth visiting.Whisky Trail
Drive first to Crieff and enjoy The Famous Grouse Experience at Glenturret, Scotland's oldest distillery. Continue on the 45-minute drive to Aberfeldy and visit Dewar's World of Whisky or visit the historic Tullibardine distillery at Blackford near Auchterarder on the A9.As an alternative, enjoy a scenic drive to Pitlochry and visit one of Scotland's oldest working distilleries at Blair Athol and go on to Scotland's smallest distillery at Edradour.
Glasgow or Edinburgh
Drive to Polmont and catch a train to spend a full day in either of Scotland's two largest cities. Alternatively, for Edinburgh use the Ingliston Park and Ride near Edinburgh airport.Glencoe & Oban with optional visits to Ben Cruachan and Inverary
Drive north along the A84, A85 and A82 to visit Glencoe the dramatic scene of the 17th century massacre of the Macdonalds by the Campbells. Then take the A828 coastal route to Oban. Return via the A85.Alternatively, after visiting Glencoe drive back down to Tyndrum and along the A85 to Dalmally to visit Cruachan Power Station deep within Ben Cruachan on the banks of Loch Awe. You can then continue along the A85 to Oban or return via Crianlarich. Yet another option is to drive south on the A82 and A85 to Dalmally and then take the A819 to the fishing village of Inveraray which is well worth a visit; attractions include Inveraray Castle, Inveraray Jail and the Inveraray Maritime Experience.
